About the Company

Founded in 1955 as Frontier Welding Works by Gyan Chandra Bhatia and incorporated in its present form in 1986, Frontier Alloy Steels Limited (FASL) has grown into a leading Indian manufacturer of precision-engineered components and systems for the railway sector. With over six decades of manufacturing heritage, FASL supplies critical castings and machined parts to Indian Railways and to railway Original Equipment Manufacturers in the United States and Europe.

Our manufacturing operations span four disciplines — steel castings, investment castings, fabricated products, and metal-bonded rubber — supporting flagship rolling stock platforms including Vande Bharat, LHB coaches, and locomotives. The company is committed to precision engineering, dimensional integrity, and long-term excellence in service.

Our Paonta Sahib facility is in a phase of planned expansion, and we are strengthening our casting finishing operations to support this growth.

About the Role

This is a full-time, on-site, shop-floor position for an Engineer in our Casting Finishing department at Paonta Sahib. The role is responsible for the fettling, grinding, lathe machining, gauging, and final finishing of steel and investment castings — the critical operations that take a raw casting from the knock-out stage to a dispatch-ready, dimensionally verified component.

The role is hands-on, supervisory, and floor-driven. It calls for someone who is comfortable working alongside operators, reading drawings fluently, troubleshooting on the spot, and taking ownership of throughput, quality, and safety in the finishing area.

We welcome candidates across experience levels — from sharp freshers with strong fundamentals and a willingness to learn the foundry shop floor, to seasoned engineers and senior shop-floor supervisors with deep finishing experience.

Key Responsibilities

Grinding & Fettling

  • Supervise and execute swing-frame grinding, pedestal grinding, and hand-grinding operations on steel and investment castings
  • Plan removal sequences for risers, runners, gates, and parting-line flash to optimise time, abrasive consumption, and dimensional yield
  • Manage grinding wheel selection, dressing, balancing, and consumption; track wheel life and finishing cost per part
  • Drive operator productivity, abrasive cost control, and scrap reduction on the finishing line

Lathe & Machining

  • Plan and supervise lathe operations on castings — turning, facing, boring, threading, and chamfering as required
  • Set up and verify jobs on conventional and CNC lathes; ensure correct fixturing, tool selection, and cutting parameters
  • Troubleshoot dimensional, surface-finish, and chatter issues on the shop floor
  • Coordinate with the tool room on fixture, jig, and tooling requirements

Gauging & Final Finishing

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings with strong command of GD&T and tolerance schemes
  • Carry out and supervise dimensional inspection using verniers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, snap gauges, plug gauges, and check fixtures
  • Manage first-piece inspection, in-process gauging, and final dimensional verification before dispatch
  • Maintain gauge calibration schedules and inspection records
  • Coordinate with the quality team on non-conformances, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions
  • Oversee final finishing operations — deburring, surface preparation, marking, and packing readiness

Operations & People

  • Plan daily and weekly production schedules for the finishing area in coordination with foundry, machine shop, and dispatch
  • Lead, train, and develop operators, grinders, and machinists working in the finishing department
  • Drive shop-floor 5S, safety compliance, and good housekeeping practices
  • Maintain accurate production records, downtime logs, and finishing department MIS

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B.E. / B.Tech) in Mechanical, Production, or Industrial Engineering, or a Diploma in Mechanical / Production Engineering with strong relevant shop-floor experience
  • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering and manufacturing processes
  • Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and applying GD&T
  • Working knowledge of grinding, lathe, and basic machining operations
  • Familiarity with measuring instruments — verniers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, dial indicators, snap and plug gauges
  • Comfortable on the shop floor, willing to get hands dirty, and able to communicate with operators in Hindi
  • Analytical thinking, structured problem-solving, and clear technical communication
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols, quality standards, and on-time delivery
  • Willingness to work on-site at Paonta Sahib in a foundry environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior hands-on experience in a steel foundry, investment casting unit, or forging shop, particularly in fettling, grinding, or finishing operations
  • Familiarity with swing-frame grinders, pedestal grinders, and CNC/conventional lathes
  • Exposure to railway, automotive, or heavy engineering casting standards (IRS, RDSO, AAR, EN, ASTM)
  • Familiarity with quality systems including ISO 9001 and IRIS
  • Experience supervising shop-floor teams and managing daily production output
  • Demonstrated interest in continuous improvement, abrasive cost reduction, and finishing yield optimisation

What We Offer

  • A genuinely hands-on role at the heart of the manufacturing operation
  • Direct involvement in programmes for Indian Railways and international railway OEMs
  • Sponsored training, certifications, and technical exchange opportunities with our international technology partners
  • Compensation benchmarked to industry standards, with performance-linked components
  • Relocation and accommodation support for candidates moving to the Paonta Sahib region
  • A structured learning environment for engineers at all experience levels, from freshers to seasoned shop-floor professionals
