The Head of Government Affairs is responsible for leading all regulatory and government engagement activities in Malaysia to enable fast, compliant and scalable execution of BYD Malaysia automotive business operations. This role ensures seamless interaction with all relevant governmental authorities, securing timely approvals, permits, certifications and incentives critical to business expansion.
This is a high-accountability role focused on execution speed, regulatory precision and zero-delay approval management in a fast-moving automotive industry environment.
Responsibilities:
- Own end-to-end liaison with Malaysian government authorities including MITI, MIDA, JPJ, DOE (JAS), Royal Malaysian Customs, SIRIM, local councils and other regulatory bodies.
- Ensure full compliance with Malaysian regulatory frameworks governing automotive, manufacturing and environmental standards.
- Act as primary owner for regulatory clearance processes to support business operations and expansion.
- Proactively monitor regulatory updates, policy shifts and incentive frameworks; translate them into actionable business requirements.
- Manage inspections, audits and technical reviews from government agencies, ensuring full readiness and compliance at all times.
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based working relationships with key officers and decision-makers across relevant ministries and agencies.
- Identify and resolve regulatory bottlenecks decisively to avoid delays in approvals, launches or operations.
- Coordinate closely with Legal, Compliance, Operations, Supply Chain and Product teams to ensure alignment on regulatory execution.
- Represent the company in official government meetings, technical discussions, industry engagements and compliance reviews.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Business Administration, Engineering, Public Policy, or related discipline.
- Minimum 5–8 years of experience in government liaison, regulatory affairs, automotive compliance, or related authority-facing roles in Malaysia.
- Strong understanding of Malaysian regulatory ecosystem including MITI, MIDA, JPJ, DOE, SIRIM, Customs and local council requirements.
- Prior experience in automotive, manufacturing or other highly regulated industries strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to drive approvals and navigate complex government processes in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong stakeholder management, negotiation and communication skills with government authorities.
- High discipline in documentation accuracy, compliance tracking and process ownership.
- Ability to work under pressure with tight timelines and business-critical deliverables.
- Fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia; Mandarin proficiency is an added advantage.
