Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Crane Road Mechanic / Field Service Technician to join our team in the Tampa Bay area.

This is a hands-on field service position for an experienced mechanic who can independently diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair mobile cranes and related heavy equipment. The mechanic will respond to equipment breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance and inspections, and make repairs both in the field and at our facility.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with mobile hydraulic cranes, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical/electronic diagnostics, and crane control systems.

Experience working on Liebherr, Link-Belt, Grove, Manitowoc, Tadano, Terex, or similar mobile cranes is highly desirable.

A company service truck, specialty tools, diagnostic equipment, and manufacturer software will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel throughout the Tampa Bay area and surrounding Florida markets to diagnose and repair cranes and heavy equipment in the field.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on mobile hydraulic cranes and support equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, including fuel, cooling, intake, exhaust, DPF/DEF, aftertreatment, and emissions systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, hoses, outriggers, steering systems, and load-sensing circuits.
  • Diagnose electrical and electronic problems involving wiring, sensors, CAN bus systems, PLCs, modules, and electronic crane controls.
  • Troubleshoot crane-specific systems, including LMI/RCL systems, anti-two-block systems, boom controls, outrigger systems, and safety devices.
  • Read and interpret hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, service manuals, fault codes, and parts diagrams.
  • Use diagnostic laptops, manufacturer software, meters, pressure gauges, and other testing equipment to accurately identify problems.
  • Respond to emergency field-service and equipment breakdown calls and make repairs efficiently to minimize crane downtime.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and assist with annual and frequent crane inspections.
  • Identify safety-related deficiencies and communicate required repairs before equipment is returned to service.
  • Perform welding and light fabrication repairs when needed and qualified.
  • Maintain accurate electronic work orders documenting labor hours, repairs performed, diagnostic findings, and parts used.
  • Communicate equipment condition, parts requirements, repair recommendations, and estimated downtime with operations and management.
  • Maintain the assigned company service truck, tools, equipment, and parts inventory in a clean and professional condition.
  • Follow all company, OSHA, manufacturer, and jobsite safety requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience as a crane mechanic, heavy-equipment mechanic, or field-service technician.
  • Strong preference for candidates with direct mobile crane repair experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and electronic diagnostics.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot equipment in the field and determine the correct repair.
  • Ability to read and understand hydraulic and electrical schematics, fault codes, and technical service manuals.
  • Experience using diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting equipment.
  • Must have your own basic mechanic hand tools. The company provides specialty tools, diagnostic equipment/software, and a service truck.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate a company-provided field-service truck.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and safely climb, bend, kneel, and work on and around large cranes.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, at heights, and in varying Florida weather conditions.
  • Must be dependable, self-motivated, safety-conscious, and capable of working independently.
  • Must be available for overtime and occasional after-hours field-service calls when required.
  • Must pass required pre-employment screening.

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred but not required:

  • Experience with Liebherr, Link-Belt, Grove, Manitowoc, Tadano, and/or Terex cranes.
  • Manufacturer-specific crane training or certifications.
  • Experience with Cummins, CAT, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, or similar heavy-duty diesel engines.
  • Experience troubleshooting LMI/RCL systems, CAN bus networks, crane computers, sensors, and electronic control modules.
  • NCCCO Crane Inspector certification or experience assisting with annual crane inspections.
  • Class A CDL or willingness to obtain one.(not required for the job)
  • Experience using electronic fleet-maintenance and work-order software.

Pay: $28.00 – $45.00 per hour
