Essential Job Functions

Supervises or participates in the arrangements for maintenance and repair of equipment, and for replacement units while equipment is undergoing repair.

Plans and conducts annual inspections mandated by the CHP, as required.

Confers with Department personnel regarding their equipment needs and makes arrangements for securing such equipment by transfer of equipment from other operating units, rental of equipment, or makes recommendations for the purchase of additional equipment.

Supervises and may participate in the inspection of new equipment or equipment in the process of being manufactured or modified for compliance with specifications, accepting or rejecting the equipment or recommending changes.

Prepares specifications for equipment to be purchased or modified.

Makes recommendations regarding standardization of procurement procedures and improvement in operating and maintenance procedures on the basis of equipment inspection, surveys and records.

Makes recommendations regarding assignment of equipment to the various sections of the Department and coordinates the transfer of equipment between sections.

Participates in the preparation of the Department's automotive and heavy construction equipment budget.

Prepares memos or reports recommending disposal of equipment through trade-in or salvage, based on records and inspection of equipment.

Involved in inspections related to automotive accidents involving Department personnel, and documents findings in writing.

Performs road tests to ensure that complaints in regards to vehicle performance of the vehicles are in compliance to specification.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

OPTION I

Three (3) years' technical* experience in the procurement or inspection of automotive and heavy construction equipment, or three years in the supervision of the maintenance and repair or operation of such equipment.

OPTION II

One year's experience as an Assistant Automotive Equipment Coordinator .**

LICENSE

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a valid California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

LICENSE INFORMATION

Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

PHYSICAL CLASS

Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

To qualify, applicants must have County status in this class, as evidenced by holding or having held such payroll title. NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE WILL BE ACCEPTED.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE

As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This Examination Will Consist Of Two (2) Parts

PART I

A written multiple-choice test assessing general automotive service knowledge, weighted 40%.

THE WRITTEN MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I TO PROCEED TO PART II.

PART II

A walk through performance test measuring the applicant's ability to inspect a vehicle and identify defects present, weighted 60%. Candidates who are taking the performance test will need to bring their own safety goggles/glasses for use on the exam. As part of the performance test, candidates will also be required to complete a brief writing exercise. Candidates who do not submit a writing sample will be disqualified from this examination

APPLICANTS MUST RECEIVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER IN EACH WEIGHTED PART OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

TESTING ACCOMMODATION

If you require an accommodation to fairly compete in any part of the examination process, you will be required to submit documentation from a qualified medical provider or other qualified professional to support your request for a testing accommodation. Please note, you will be contacted at a later time by a Sheriff’s Department representative that will guide you through the process. You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation. Failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will delay your participation in the examination process and consideration for initial placement on the eligible list.

VETERAN'S CREDIT

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to [email protected] within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of filing.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION

The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their group for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation.

The list of successful applicants developed from this exam will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Technology and Support Division, Communications and Fleet Management.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:

  • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.

Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
